Recently I was lucky enough to visit the newly opened Koa Recovery, a purpose built centre that specialises in a range of premium recovery therapies and healing solutions. Modelled on centres in the USA, it is one of the few recovery centres in Australia and encourages guests to put themselves, and their health and wellbeing first. Shaun Button is the owner and founder of the centre, and was driven to establish the centre after a niggling back injury started to affect his life.
Located in Waterloo in Sydney, I chose to brave the freezing temperatures and took part in my first Cryotherapy session. I was quite nervous and didn’t know what to expect, but hey, if it’s good enough for Gigi and LeBron, I just had to give it a go!
I was greeted by Shaun, who was super friendly – and also from Newcastle I might add – and I immediately knew I was in good hands. He took me on a tour through the facility, which features a state-of-the art float tank, plus a variety of other recovery therapies, and ran through all the treatment options available.
He then talked me through what I could expect from the cryotherapy chamber before I changed into my robe, thermal socks, shoes and gloves. It’s important to note that you can wear underwear into the chamber, however you can’t wear any metal, so wire bras are a no go!
When I jumped into the tank, it was sitting just under zero and for the three minutes I was in there, the temperature plummeted to -104 degrees celsius, crazy I know. But I survived and Shaun was impressed that I wasn’t even shivering, so with this treatment, it pays to like the cold! Shaun was great and talked to me the whole time during the session, which definitely helped to keep my mind occupied and not focusing on the ever decreasing temperature. Once I had finished, I took a few minutes just to recover and regulate my body temperature. And unsurprisingly, you feel very awake and sprightly after the treatment, but Shaun was right – I slept like a log that night!
I absolutely loved Cryotherapy and am looking into doing it on a regular basis. Koa offers memberships and packages to ensure you get the most out of your visit – click here for more information!
If you are a bit like me and not sure what each of the therapies focus on, I have given a brief rundown below of the options available at Koa that hopefully might help!
With the help of Liquid Nitrogen, the skin is exposed to temperatures as low as -120 degrees celsius for up to 3 minutes. This treatment is perfect for improving athletic performance and recovery time by 50%, as well as boosting the metabolism, weight loss, and enhancing the immune system. It also offers anti-inflammatory (arthritis), anti-ageing and beauty benefits, including the reduction of cellulite and flushing of toxins – what’s not to love! Click here for more.
One of the most popular treatments, the float tank offers the ultimate relaxation experience. The luxurious pod is filled with Epsom salts, and helps to boost recovery time, assist with sleep, relieve stress, increase endorphins and boost the immune system and mental clarity through sensory deprivation. The average float time is 60 minutes, but for those with a little bit of claustrophobia, there are lights available inside the tank, and you can even leave the lid open. However, I can promise that you will really benefit from the true float experience. This treatment works well in collaboration with Cryotherapy. Click here for more.
More so for the pro athletes and fitness junkies, guests can kick back and relax in the open plan living space at the centre, with a pair of world-class compression boots. These boots help you to recover faster in between training sessions, and they even help boost post performance by reducing muscle soreness, improving circulation and assisting with lymphatic drainage. An Electrical Muscle Stimulator that is designed to accelerate your fitness results, decrease body stress and reduce recovery time. This treatment is perfect for injury rehabilitation and pain management. Whilst taking part in this treatment, guests can relax in the centre’s living space and even watch a bit of television! Click here for more.
The centre also offers vibrating foam rollers and a designated area to stretch and recover pre or post session.
I highly recommend Koa and can’t wait to go back, I would also love to hear about your experiences here!
