I think it’s something that we all fear, trying out a new hair salon and having it be a complete disaster, but in some cases it turns out to be the best decision you ever made.
I moved back to Sydney from Melbourne a few months ago and have been on the hunt for a good hairdresser ever since.
My parents live in Newcastle, so I split my time between here and Sydney, and during my travels I kept hearing about Pony Hair Studio. I did a little bit of an Insta stalk and LOVED what I saw – a good blonde is hard to achieve, but these guys were nailing it.
A little bit of time passed and I popped in for a quick blow dry and after being greeted by owner Emma Johnson, I just knew that I had to go back for my colour – hey, you know you love their work when you’re willing to put up with a three hour train ride just to get there ha!
Emma is a breath of fresh air, with some of the best looking locks in town – seriously. Not only is she lovely and gorgeous, but she’s also a #GirlBoss in her own right. Growing up in Hale, in Greater Manchester, Emma set about building her career in hairdressing. Prior to moving to Australia, Emma managed her own salon in her hometown and even worked at New York Fashion Week in 2014 for none other than Victoria Beckham – I know!
Having visited the blow dry bars throughout the UK and LA, and with Newcastle calling her name, Emma was inspired to bring this relatively new concept down under. Pony Hair Studio is a completely new notion for Newcastle and one that has it ranked against the blow dry bars in Sydney, which is no easy feat. So not only is Pony one of a kind, but it is possibly one of the friendliest and most welcoming salons I’ve ever been to, and if anyone knows me, I’ve been to many!
Emma herself doesn’t do hair, but instead prides herself on her customer service, aiming to personalise the salon experience for each and every one of her customers – I’m not joking when I say that you leave feeling like you’ve made a new bestie.
When it comes to cut and colour, Emma has employed a fantastic group of girls to support her dreams and goals for the salon. They are all so friendly and just want to make sure you leave loving your new ‘do, And the one thing I really loved? They are all such good friends! I actually had no idea how nice it was to go to a salon where all the girls are genuinely great friends. A trip to Pony is just like catching up with a bunch of your best girlfriends – seriously fun! You kind of wish your colour needed a little longer to set just so you can keep hanging out.
Boasting a range of blow dry styles including Smooth, Waves, Curls, Big and Messy, plus cut and colour services and of course, styling for the lads, Pony ticks all the boxes. To ensure your locks look their very best, Pony uses Olaplaex and Wella Products, which I just love. Pony are also now offering makeup services, and you can even indulge in a glass of champagne during your appointment, or a coffee if it’s a bit early!
For years I have been super blonde and I love being blonde, but sometimes I just want the roots to look a little more natural. Whenever I get my colour done, I always ask to change it up, but I always leave looking the same. But Emma and her team truly listened, and advised of having a Root Fade, where the natural colour of the roots is blended out – perfect if you are like me and aren’t great at making follow-up appointments. I also wear hair extensions, so the lovely Jayne took so much care in ensuring my colour would match these, which were being applied at a later date.
Ever since my appointment, I have had so many compliments with and without my extensions, so it’s safe to say that I highly recommend Pony Hair Studio – for the hair and the social! My sister just landed back in Australia from London and I’ve already convinced her to make an appointment, and trust me, she’s picky when it comes to colour.
So Newcastle and Sydney gals, do your hair a favour and jump on the Pony bandwagon (no pun intended) – you won’t regret it, I promise x
